125+ This-or-That Questions to Break the Ice

Jon Conelias - Apr 20 2022, 2:24:00 PM

Looking for the best this-or-that questions? This-or-that is a fun and easy game you can play with friends, family, colleagues, or pretty much anyone! It makes a great icebreaker, and it can spark conversations, as well as let you learn more about your friends or colleagues.

How does this-or-that work?

To play this-or-that, you simply ask someone to choose which they prefer out of two options. Think “chocolate cake or ice cream,” for instance.

In a group, people usually take it in turns — so the first person asks the second person a question, then the second person answers it and asks the third person a question, and so on.

It’s quite like “Would you rather?” — except this-or-that questions tend to be short and simple and focus on choosing between two items or concepts rather than two scenarios.

Here are some great this-or-that questions to try.

Variations on this-or-that

If you want to switch things up a bit with your game of this-or-that, you could try:

  • Setting a time limit (e.g., five seconds) on answers — rapid-fire rounds keep the game moving fast!
  • Divide into teams: Each team needs to agree on an answer to the question. This can be a great opportunity to try out your persuasive skills.
  • Guess what the other person or team will choose, perhaps writing down your prediction.

This-or-that is quick to play and makes a great conversation starter. Give it a try during your next work social event or at a family gathering. It could make a great lead-in to a bigger game, too, such as Get to Know Your Team Trivia.
